Twelve-year old Rory Staunton took a dive for a basketball during gym class and came up with a cut on his arm. The school nurse applied a couple of band-aids, without cleaning the cut, and off he went. In approximately three days, hospital physicians told his parents there was nothing else that they could do for their son; he was dead. Rory died of sepsis, a condition which should become a household word because of its danger, and immediate threat of death. According to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, sepsis impacts more than 1.5 million people per year, causing intense... more

Siri can definitely be helpful when you need her (or him), but you may not want the entire world hearing Siri's responses in certain situations. If you're in a library, meeting, class, or another scenario where your iPhone's voice assistant would do more harm than good, there's a way to keep Siri silent ... but it's tricky. By default, Siri is set to provide voice feedback no matter how you're using her/him. So even if your ring switch is set to silent, it won't have any effect on Siri's loudness. Of course, if you don't want to mute her outright, you could just adjust your iPhone's volume... more

When you first set up an iPhone, you'll be prompted to create a 6-digit passcode to unlock your screen and access certain system settings. If you skip this step, you can always go back and create one, which we highly recommend. Without a passcode, everything on your iPhone is accessible by anyone who gets their hands on it — nosey friends, hackers, thieves, local law enforcement, the FBI — and you don't want that, do you? After you add a passcode, you'll need it every time you unlock your iPhone, as well as after turning on or restarting your iPhone, updating your software, erasing your... more

Most newer phones come with a grayscale mode that you can activate when you want to save some battery life. The way it works is simple: If your graphics chip only has to render elements in black and white instead of full 32-bit color, it won't consume as much power. But Google's Pixel and Nexus phones don't have a grayscale mode — at least, not officially. They do, however, have a hidden setting that will turn your screen black and white just the same. This option may not have the same power-saving benefits as a true grayscale mode option would, because it's still unclear if it works at the... more

To trap methane and produce a useful product in the process, a group of scientists has developed a technique to convert methane into electricity close to the wellheads. And they found a bacteria that will do the job for them. Their research was published May 17th in Nature Communications. "When you ship methane, you release a greenhouse gas. We can't eliminate all the leakage, but we could cut it... more
